When you turn on your HVAC system, the air that comes out of it should not have any odor at all. It should be almost odorless, or just smell like the rest of the air in your home. If the air coming out of your HVAC system has a bad odor all the time, that odor may be coming from your air ducts. If your air ducts or dirty or harboring items such as mold and bacteria, that could cause your air to smell off. If you change out your air filter on time and the air from your HVAC system still doesn't smell right, the source may be your air ducts.
#2 Bio-Slime in Your Condensation Pan
Your condensation pan should just contain water. If your condensation pan is full of green and off-color bio-slime, that is a sign that something is not right with your system. More often than not, dirty air ducts are what is behind the bio-slime in your condensation pans.
#3 Visible Debris in Air Vents

If you can see visible dirt at the entrance to your air vents, just image what is lurking in the rest of your vents that you can't see. When you can see dirt and dust building up inside of your vents, that is a sign that you are going to need to clean your vents.
