Four Problems That Can Cause Your AC To Blow Hot Air Instead Of Cooling Your Home

Posted on: 11 August 2015

Many problems can reduce the efficiency of your air conditioner. When these problems get too big, the air coming out of the vents can be hot. Some problems like a frozen coil can easily be fixed. There can be other problems like clogged filters that restrict airflow. If your AC is blowing out hot air, here are some things that you may want to check:

1. Clogged Filters Restricting Airflow Of Ducts

Clogged AC filters are one of the main causes of HVAC problems. When your filter gets stopped up with debris, it can restrict airflow. This will cause your AC to blow hot air or not have any air coming out of the vents at all. You will want to check the filter and unit around the filter first. In addition, check for dirt in the housing and around the filter.

2. Dirty Coil Causing Freezing Of The AC

Dirt can also get on the coil of your AC, which is what provides that cooling, When this happens, condensation will form and freeze. This can then cause other problems such as a compressor overheating or freezing up. Look at any visible copper lines, and if you see frost turn the AC off. This usually means that the coil needs to be cleaned, which you will also want to have the compressor inspected when this is done.

3. Tripped Breaker Or Main Turned Off

Another common problem with an AC can be something as simple as a switch being flipped. You can check the breakers to make sure that the system has power. Also, look near the unit for a power box. Inside, there will be a main switch that can be turned off. Sometimes, when you have service done the main may be left off.

4. Faulty Thermostat Or Wrong Temperature Setting

Another problem that you may have with your AC is the thermostat. First, check to make sure that the temperature is set low enough for your AC to come on. Turn the thermostat lower to get it to come on. If it does not come on, try resetting it or changing batteries if it has batteries. If these things do not work, you may need to have it replaced.

These are some problems that you may want to check when your AC is blowing out hot air. If you are still having trouble with your AC, contact an HVAC contractor company like Tropic Air Conditioning INC to get the service and repairs you need to keep your air conditioning cooling your home.
