Keeping The HVAC System Running Well
Posted on: 8 June 2018
When it comes to systems in your home, your HVAC system will be one of your biggest home investments. However, it is also one of your most worth-while ones. It will help your family to stay warm when its cold outside and stay cool when its hot outside. It will also help to prevent pipes from freezing in the house and furniture from deteriorating due to over exposure to too much heat and cold. While your HVAC system doesn't require a whole lot out of you with regards to care and maintenance, there are still a few things that you will want to be sure you stay on top of in order to keep it performing well. Here are some of the things you want to make sure you are doing for your HVAC system:
Take proper care of the outside unit
It can be easy to forget all about that outside unit since it is generally out of sight and out of mind. However, there are some things you want to make sure you do to keep it in good functioning order. You want to make sure the unit has been installed on a flat, level surface. You also want to make sure the area around it is regularly weeded, mowed or otherwise tended to, so overgrowth doesn't cause a problem for the unit. Keep it free of things like mulch and other debris. After high winds, go out to make sure trash or other items haven't blown against the unit. Provide it with some shade from the direct sunlight. This shade can come via a tree, a canopy or simply by positioning the unit in a place not probe to taking on the majority of the sun's rays during the day. The more the sun beats down on the unit, the higher your energy bills will get because the unit needs to work that much harder to cool the air.
Keep your filters, ducts and registers clean
While you may not have to worry about having your ducts cleaned for a long time, until you start to notice issues, your filters and registers will need regular attention. You can use a duster to go around the house and dust off the registers, so they don't blow dust through the house causing allergy flareups and other issues. Your air filter will need to be removed and either rinsed off or completely replaced often. Pay attention to its condition and figure out for yourself how long it can go between cleanings. It's easier to get a washable filter you will cut to fit. This way, anytime it is dirty, you just take it out, hose it off, allow it to dry and pop it back in. When you go with replaceable ones, it can be easy to forget to pick them up at the store and this can cause you to leave the filter dirty longer than you should.
Have the system serviced annually
Before you start to use the HVAC system, you really should have a tech come out and look it over. This way, if there is any problem with it, they can fix it first, so you don't make it worse by running it while it has issues.
